Sunshine Islands Bus Simulator Guide

Sunshine Islands Bus Simulator beginner guide

Quick answer

Press P for the parking brake, W to start, and K for the front door when the game prompts you within about 7 metres of a stop — then never skip a scheduled stop.

Your first shift in Sunshine Islands Bus Simulator comes down to three keys — P for the parking brake, W to get moving, K for the front door — plus one rule: never skip a scheduled stop. Everything else on this page is detail around those four things.

The controls you actually need

These are the shortcuts documented for the PC build; mobile and console use on-screen and gamepad controls for the same functions.

How a shift actually works

  1. Choose the route from the menu. Routes you have not unlocked yet cannot be driven as a normal shift, but a Daily Challenge can hand you one anyway (level 10 required).
  2. Start the bus and release the parking brake. Pull away from the stand with W.
  3. Stop properly at every scheduled stand. Within roughly 7 metres of the stop the game asks you to apply the parking brake and open the front door. At two depot stops (CSB Depot rooftop and the Forever Transit depot) that prompt only appears at 3-4 metres.
  4. Let boarding finish. Passengers tap a card reader or drop coins and fare-box tickets in, then move to a seat — standing in the aisle or on the upper deck of a double decker if it is full. The rear door does not speed this up: AI passengers only board through the front door.
  5. Watch for the bell. A passenger presses it at their stop, then walks to the exit in a straight line. Open the rear door (L) if the bus has one, wait for everyone to alight, then close up and go.
  6. Finish the route. The shift pays out experience and Sunshards — but only if you did not skip a scheduled stop.

What passengers complain about

AI passengers have been in the game since version 1.4.5 and Version 2 added wheelchair users, so the boarding rules are stricter than they look:

  • Boarding is skipped entirely on free services: private hires, sponsored Daily Challenge routes, university route U47 and staff shuttles.
  • Passengers will not board through an open rear door, even if you open it to speed things up.
  • On a single-door bus, nobody boards until everyone has finished alighting.
  • Congestion matters: if people are still in the aisle, the next passenger waits with a hand on the reader.
  • Harsh braking, long acceleration or deceleration, and speeding all generate complaints — Grumble Day events exist purely to make that worse.

What to unlock first

Level 10 unlocks both Daily Challenges and Community Servers, and it is also where rare vehicle appearances start. Until then, spend shifts on inner-zone routes: shorter runs mean more finishes per hour, and more finishes is the whole progression system.

Sunshards — the currency Version 2 added — come from daily login streaks, first-time route completions (5), first-time pro-mode completions (15), time on route (7 per 25 minutes, doubling by 50 minutes), Daily Challenges (20 to 700) and Daily Tasks (10 each, plus 30 for clearing all three).

The mistakes that cost new drivers

  • Leaving the parking brake on while rolling, which reads as harsh braking.
  • Pulling too far past the stand so the 7 metre prompt never fires.
  • Closing the front door before boarding animation finishes.
  • Skipping a stop to make up time — it removes the reward instead of saving it.
  • Starting on a three-digit inter-zone route on day one. The highways are fast, the stops are far apart, and one missed stand is expensive.
